GET ON THE BUS! We are inviting you to join us on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 in Harrisburg for the #CLOSEthecreek “Rally for Justice.”
The #CLOSEthecreek campaign, partners & supporters, are convening a “Rally for Justice” and Day of Action at the State Capitol in Harrisburg on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 @ 11:00 a.m. The Rally for Justice and Day of Action will be an opportunity for concerned community members, families, victims and survivors, directly impacted leaders, restorative justice practitioners, and social justice advocates to lobby for comprehensive criminal justice reform in Pennsylvania by raising our collective voices to demand that state legislators focus on the following criminal justice reform issues:
Probation Reform (ending detainers, capping the length of probation)
Parole Eligibility for Lifers (supporting legislation for lifers to earn an opportunity for release)
Repealing the Sate Sentencing Commission’s vote to adopt Risk Assessment Tools
Eliminating Electronic Monitoring
Ending the use of cash bail statewide
Community Reinvestment (divesting from prisons, investing in communities)
Two bills have been introduced to address probation reform in PA (SB 14, sponsored by State Senator Anthony Williams and HB 1555, sponsored by State Representative Jordan Harris) that we will be supporting, and asking the state legislature to pass. And, two bills have been introduced to address parole eligibility for lifers (HB 135, sponsored by State Representative Jason Dawkins and SB 942, sponsored by State Senator Sharif Street) that we will be lobbying for to gain support. Additionally, we will be amplifying the need to end cash bail, eliminate the use of electronic monitors, and repeal the adoption of a risk assessment tool by the State Sentencing Commission. And, we are asking the Governor to divest from prisons and invest in communities impacted by mass incarceration so that we can begin to undo the harms caused by systemic oppression and structural racism.
